The Blackest Joy is the third studio album by author/rapper/singer Akua Naru, originally from Connecticut. Now exiled in Cologne, Germany, it was during a stay on the African continent that the American poet and activist began to conceive this project, which she envisioned as a political cry and a deep call for joy and activism. A contemporary project reflecting the demands of the American Black Lives Matter and Woke movements. Following The Journey Aflame (2011) and The Miner's Canary (2015), Akua Naru continues to blend genres, subtly combining rap, jazz, and traditional African music. The single "My Mother's Daughter" is an ode to African femininity, a rich narrative of spirituality from West Africa, lineage, and sisterhood. Among the prestigious guests are the father of ethio-jazz Mulatu Astatke and Ugandan singer Sandra Suubi. Enriched by her encounters and travel experiences, Akua embraces new cultures in this magnificent album that is both free and committed.
