Art du sanjo de Daegeum

Description

Born at the end of the 19th century, sanjo is a suite for solo instrument and drum. This genre, more than any other, embodies the traditional music of Koreans today, no doubt because of its very contemporary sonorities and the virtuosity it demands of its performers. Sanjo draws on several traditions: the improvised shamanic music sinawi, the one-actor opera pansori, and the music of the scholar class pungnyu. Initially calm and meditative in the manner of an impromptu, the piece, composed of several movements, gradually gains in speed and virtuosity, drawing the listener into a jubilant spiral.
