Released in 2016, The Impossible Kid marks Aesop Rock's first solo venture since Skelethon in 2012. On this seventh album, Aesop Rock continues his efforts to refine his technique that has made him one of the pillars of indie rap. His creative process now incorporates a desire to speak openly about his personal life, exploring topics such as depression, his sometimes difficult relationships with his family, and the few turbulent years that led him to leave his adopted home of San Francisco to live in a barn in the woods, where he returned to record the beginnings of The Impossible Kid. Like Skelethon, Aesop is in control of all creative aspects of the album, from the production he handled himself, with instrumental help from Grimace Federation of Philadelphia, to the cover design by his friend Alex Pardee.
