"These rarely heard piano transcriptions of Wagner and Verdi operas share a common theme: love and death, the two most important themes in opera, as a reflection of human life and destiny. Pianist Abdiel Vazquez presents his own 'Meistersinger Rhapsody,' a pianistic journey through this work of astonishing power. The three transcriptions of Wagner (The Ride of the Valkyries, Siegmund's Love Song, Tristan's Love Scene and Transfiguration) are made by Carl Tausig, Liszt's favorite pupil, a brilliant pianist and composer who tragically died young. The Concert Fantasy on themes from La Forza del Destino is arranged by the Italian composer Giuseppe Martucci (a wonderful composer with an excellent ear for instrumental colors), followed by two famous Liszt paraphrases (Rigoletto, Aida). The disc finds a spectacular conclusion in the diabolically difficult Paraphrase on Il Trovatore, arranged by György Cziffra."
