Ace Records has been the go-to source for 1960s American girl group compilations since the release of our “Where The Girls Are”, “Girls About Town” and “Stop, Look & Listen” vinyl albums in the 1980s. The 10-volume “Where The Girls Are” CD series followed over the subsequent decades, along with a batch of standalone CD collections. Nowadays, though, the vinyl spinner is back in vogue as the format of choice for discerning collectors. This month sees the release of “A Good Thing Goin’!”, the latest in our current series of beautifully packaged 12-inch discs. The album opens strongly with “What About You” from Mousie & the Traps. Darlene Love kicks off the second side with “Let Him Walk Away”, a song penned by Jackie DeShannon with legendary arranger Jack Nitzsche, no less. Darlene Love, one of the most beloved vocalists of the classic girl group era, also features as lead on the tremendous previously unissued “You Had A Good Thing Goin’” by the Blossoms, while Jack Nitzsche produced the luscious “Baby I’m So Glad It’s Raining” by the Satisfactions and Karen Verros’ castanet-driven version of the Crystals’ “Little Boy”. Other highlights include Brenda Holloway’s silky pre-Motown gem “Constant Love”, the hip dancer “I Only Cry Once A Day Now” by the Puffs, the Latin-tinged “Late In The Evening” by the Francettes and the rare Shrine Records’ “Bad Apple” by Linda & the Vistas. As is customary in the series, the snazzy inner sleeve features a 3,000-word image-packed commentary by long-time compiler Mick Patrick.
