Bill Orcutt

Description

BILL ORCUTT's style (the guitarist Parisians discovered at the Centre Pompidou in 2012) has often been compared to American primitivism (JOHN FAHEY, ROBBIE BASHO, LEO KOTTKE), although it incorporates timbral colors from no wave, hardcore punk, and European free improvisation. For the record, his first band, HARRY PUSSY, often opened for SONIC YOUTH or SEBADOH in the 90s. Although he has been seen since his return to the stage in 2009 with LOREN MAZZACANE CONNORS, CHRIS CORSANO, or PETER BROTZMANN, it is in absolute solo that ORCUTT's art flourishes with the most splendor, reflecting a sensitive approach that also prioritizes the spatialization of sounds. On this electric guitar solo, his very first in fact, ORCUTT reflects his obsession with American popular song and Americana through a repertoire of personal compositions and covers: White Christmas (written by IRVING BERLIN, immortalized by BING CROSBY), the American anthem Star Spangled Banner (in a radically different version from HENDRIX's) or ORNETTE COLEMAN's Lonely Woman.
