Built around the rhythm section of Anthony Kiedis and Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have moved from punk-funk clubs in early-80s Los Angeles to selling more than 60 million albums worldwide. The classic line-up cemented in 1988 with Chad Smith on drums and John Frusciante on guitar; Frusciante has now joined three separate times, most recently in 2019 for the Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen sessions.

Anthony Kiedis and Flea met as teenagers at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. With guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons, they played their first show in 1983 as Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem before settling on the band's lasting name.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik was tracked in 1991 inside a Laurel Canyon house Rick Rubin convinced the band was haunted. Living together for the duration of the sessions, they cut most of the album live in a few takes, with Frusciante's guitar dry and close-mic'd.
John Frusciante joined in 1988 at 18, left mid-tour in 1992, returned in 1998 for Californication, departed again in 2009, and rejoined in 2019. Josh Klinghoffer held the guitar chair for the I'm With You and Getaway eras.
