International Reggae

International reggae demonstrates the strength of a style born in the popular neighborhoods of Kingston and that has become a universal language. From the 70s, Jimmy Cliff and Toots and the Maytals brought this music to the world's biggest stages, revealing its unifying power.

Very quickly, each continent adopted this energy: Alpha Blondy in Ivory Coast, Lucky Dube in South Africa, Gentleman in Germany, or Groundation in the United States. Behind each voice, reggae takes on a different color, influenced by local realities and the musical traditions specific to each culture.

These black discs tell a story of exchanges and cross-cultural blending, where the swaying rhythm and powerful bass always serve as a common thread. International reggae is a borderless sound journey, to be relived through vinyl pressings that connect stages around the world.

International Reggae Vinyl: Roots, Dub and Jamaican Classics on LP

Why reggae and vinyl go hand in hand

International reggae vinyl carries the genre's whole history. In Jamaica, music spread through sound systems and 7-inch singles, and many singles carried an instrumental "version" on the B-side, which is where dub was born. Producers such as Coxsone Dodd at Studio One, Duke Reid at Treasure Isle and Lee "Scratch" Perry built their catalogs on that format, before Island's albums took reggae worldwide.

This page gathers the international reggae listed on Vinyles.com: Jamaica, the UK and scenes around the world, excluding reggae sung in French. It includes Israel Vibration, Luciano, Super Cat, Lone Ranger, Michigan & Smiley and Willie Williams, plus Soul Jazz Records compilations. For each record, you can compare offers from several partner stores.

Jamaican pressings, reissues and compilations: buying tips

Original Jamaican pressings are collectible, but manufacturing quality varies widely: surface noise, off-center labels, flimsy sleeves. UK pressings on Island or Trojan tend to be more consistent. For listening, serious reissues are an excellent option: Soul Jazz Records has released many Studio One compilations, Pressure Sounds reissues roots and dub rarities, and VP Records and Greensleeves manage large dancehall and reggae catalogs.

Essential reggae albums on vinyl

For roots, Bob Marley & The Wailers lead the way with "Catch a Fire" (1973) and "Exodus" (1977), alongside Peter Tosh's "Legalize It" (1976) and Burning Spear's "Marcus Garvey" (1975). The Congos' "Heart of the Congos," produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Culture's "Two Sevens Clash" (1977) rank among the genre's high points. For dub, King Tubby and Augustus Pablo are essential names.

In the UK, Steel Pulse released "Handsworth Revolution" (1978) and UB40 "Signing Off" (1980), while Linton Kwesi Johnson pioneered dub poetry. In South Africa, Lucky Dube became one of the leading figures of African reggae. The '80s and '90s saw dancehall rise with Yellowman, Super Cat and Lone Ranger, followed by a roots revival led by Luciano.

Roots, dub and dancehall: exploring reggae

Reggae breaks down into several eras and styles: ska and rocksteady in the '60s, roots reggae in the '70s, dub, British lovers rock, and dancehall from the '80s on. Compilations are often the best way into a label or a period. The artist links above help you follow new releases and reissues, and comparing offers across stores shows where a sought-after compilation is still available.

Frequently asked questions

What does international reggae mean here?

On Vinyles.com, international reggae covers all reggae not sung in French: Jamaica, where the genre was born, plus the UK, Africa and the rest of the world. It spans roots, dub, dancehall and compilations. French-language reggae has its own separate collection.

What reggae albums should I buy first on vinyl?

Bob Marley & The Wailers' "Catch a Fire" and "Exodus," Peter Tosh's "Legalize It" and Burning Spear's "Marcus Garvey" make a strong foundation. Add Culture's "Two Sevens Clash" and The Congos' "Heart of the Congos" for roots, and a Studio One compilation to hear the sound of the '60s and '70s.

What is a dub version on a B-side?

In Jamaica, many 7-inch singles carried a "version" of the song on the B-side: a remixed instrumental with the vocals stripped out or fragmented and echo effects added. That practice gave birth to dub, with engineers like King Tubby. Deejays also used these versions to toast live over at sound system dances.

Should I buy an original Jamaican pressing?

An original Jamaican pressing has real collector value, but manufacturing quality varies a lot. For listening, a period UK pressing or a serious reissue often offers better value. Either way, ask for a detailed condition report before buying used. Many classic albums are also available as new reissues.
