Grunge Vinyl Records: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Seattle on LP
Grunge vinyl: what this collection covers
This page gathers the grunge vinyl records listed on Vinyles.com, each with offers from several partner stores. Grunge took shape in the mid-80s in the Pacific Northwest around Seattle: distorted guitars borrowed from punk and metal, heavy tempos and raw vocals. The collection includes pioneers and influences like Melvins, Screaming Trees and Meat Puppets, 90s-wave bands such as Stone Temple Pilots, Mad Season, Candlebox and Silverchair, the women-led scene of L7 and Babes in Toyland, and Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell's solo work.
Essential grunge records
Seattle label Sub Pop was central: it released Mudhoney and Nirvana's debut "Bleach" (1989). Then 1991 brought Nirvana's "Nevermind", Pearl Jam's "Ten" and Soundgarden's "Badmotorfinger". Alice in Chains followed with "Dirt" (1992), and Soundgarden reached a huge audience with "Superunknown" (1994). Those grunge records moved the sound from local clubs to mainstream radio in just a few years, and they are the natural starting point for any shelf of grunge records.
Around those pillars, Stone Temple Pilots' "Core" (1992), Screaming Trees, Mad Season's only album "Above" (1995) and Australian band Silverchair's "Frogstomp" (1995) fill out the picture. Melvins remain a major influence on the heavy end of grunge and on sludge metal, and their records are a good step for anyone who wants the rawest side of the sound.
