French R&B Vinyl: From Les Nubians to Aya Nakamura on Record
French R&B on vinyl: a format catching up
French R&B vinyl was scarce for a long time. When R&B sung in French took off in the late '90s and 2000s, the CD ruled and most albums never came out on LP, or only as 12-inch singles for DJs. That has changed in recent years: many current artists release their albums on vinyl, often in color editions, and some classics from that era have been reissued.
This page gathers the French-language R&B records listed on Vinyles.com, from Amel Bent and Shy'm to Tayc, Aya Nakamura, Imen Es, Wejdene and Fally Ipupa. For each one, you can compare offers from several partner stores before clicking through to the one you choose.
Key artists and albums in French R&B
Among the pioneers, Les Nubians released "Princesses Nubiennes" in 1998, a soul and R&B album in French that found listeners as far as the United States. The 2000s were the genre's first golden age, with Corneille's "Parce qu'on vient de loin," Matt Houston, Kayna Samet, Vitaa, Sheryfa Luna, Singuila and Amel Bent, who broke through with "Ma philosophie" in 2004. Shy'm carried that pop-R&B sound into the next decade.
Since the late 2010s, a new generation has reached a much bigger audience. Aya Nakamura, with the album "Nakamura" (2018) and the hit "Djadja," blends R&B, Afropop and zouk. Tayc, Dadju, Imen Es and Wejdene represent today's generation of French-language R&B, while Fally Ipupa connects Congolese rumba and R&B.
Buying French R&B on vinyl: what to check
For 2000s albums, first make sure a vinyl edition actually exists: many were never pressed as LPs, and a "vinyl" listing may really be a 12-inch single or a CD. Period vinyl editions are rare and can be expensive. For current artists, albums often come in several versions, black vinyl, color, signed copies, sometimes exclusive to one store, so prices vary widely from one offer to the next.
- Exact format: LP, 12-inch single or CD
- Color or exclusive edition: compare with the standard version
