Which rock compilations are worth buying on vinyl?

Compilations that revived a whole scene, like "Nuggets" for 1960s garage rock, and well-documented anthologies from reissue labels are safe bets. Official best-ofs are also worthwhile for bands known mostly for their singles rather than their albums, since they gather those songs in one place.

"Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era" is a double LP compilation released by Elektra in 1972 and compiled by Lenny Kaye. It gathers American garage and psychedelic singles from the 1960s and strongly influenced musicians of the following decade.

Does a compilation sound worse than an album?

Not necessarily. An official compilation cut from good masters, with a sensible number of songs per side, can sound excellent. A side that runs too long has to be cut at a lower level, though, and an unclear audio source can hurt the sound.

How do I identify an original pressing of a rock compilation?

Compare the label, center label design, jacket and the matrix numbers etched near the label with details of the first edition. Collector databases document these details for most releases. If in doubt, ask the seller for clear photos before you buy.

Rock Compilation Vinyl: Garage Classics, Best-Ofs and Label Anthologies

What a rock compilation brings to your shelf

A rock compilation on vinyl collects tracks that were never conceived as one album: a band's singles, a label's output, or a selection built around a scene. A good one lets you hear an entire era in a few sides, from 1950s rock and roll to 1960s garage or indie rock. Some compilations have even become essential records in their own right, because they revived forgotten bands and shaped later musicians.

This page gathers the rock compilations tracked on Vinyles.com, including best-ofs, box sets and themed collections. For each record you can compare offers from several partner stores, see whether a recent edition costs less than an older used copy, and spot double LPs or box sets that cover a whole catalog.

Compilations that shaped rock history

In 1972, the double LP "Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era", compiled by Lenny Kaye for Elektra, gathered American garage and psychedelic singles from the 1960s and inspired a generation of musicians. Other rediscovery series followed, such as "Pebbles". In the 1970s, TV-advertised hit compilations from K-Tel and Ronco brought rock to a mass audience. Later, reissue labels like Rhino and Ace Records built well-documented anthologies.

Garage and psych: "Nuggets", "Pebbles"
Early rock and roll: Sun Records anthologies with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash
Band best-ofs: singles and B-sides together
Label box sets: Rhino, Ace Records

Vintage pressing or reissue: what to check

For an older compilation, condition comes first. Popular 1970s compilations were often played heavily and sometimes pressed on fairly thin vinyl, so inspect both sides and the jacket. Also count the tracks per side: the longer a side runs, the lower the cutting level and bass, which you can hear on an overstuffed compilation.

For a reissue, favor an identifiable publisher that states where the recordings come from and how they are licensed. Official best-ofs from a band's own record company generally use the original versions, which is not always true of budget compilations, where later re-recordings or unlabeled live versions sometimes turn up.
