What is the difference between a score and a soundtrack?

The score is the music composed specifically for the film, usually instrumental and orchestral. "Soundtrack" is broader and can also mean a compilation of the songs used in the movie. Some films have two separate albums, so check the track list and look for "Original Score" or "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" before buying.

Why are some soundtrack vinyl records so expensive?

Many are released in limited runs with illustrated sleeves, color vinyl or double LPs by specialist labels such as Mondo or Waxwork Records. Once they sell out, used copies often go for more. Comparing offers from several stores shows whether a cheaper standard edition of the same score is also available.

How can I tell if a film music record is the original recording?

Check the cover and the listing: the composer, orchestra and conductor should match the film, with a credit like "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack". Records titled along the lines of "great movie themes", or performed by an orchestra unrelated to the film, are usually re-recordings rather than the actual soundtrack.

Can you buy video game soundtracks on vinyl?

Yes, and the category has grown quickly. The video game music subcollection gathers these releases. Labels such as Data Discs, known for its reissues of Sega game music, and iam8bit specialize in this repertoire, often with limited runs, illustrated sleeves and color vinyl. Compare offers early, as these editions rarely stay in stock for long.

Soundtracks (Films, series, games, etc.)

Soundtracks are much more than just sonic accompaniment: they embody the soul of the films, series, or video games they illustrate. The music becomes inseparable from the visuals, leaving a lasting impression and extending the emotion long after the credits roll.

Legendary composers like Ennio Morricone, John Williams, and Hans Zimmer have delivered iconic scores, instantly capable of transporting listeners into familiar worlds. In the world of video games, creations such as those by Nobuo Uematsu for Final Fantasy or Koji Kondo for The Legend of Zelda have become essential references.

Each soundtrack vinyl is a gateway to imaginary worlds. Whether it's a great cinema classic, a cult series, or a video game universe, these records allow us to relive strong emotions and bring the images they accompany back to life.

More than just listening, it's a true sensory immersion.

Soundtrack Vinyl: Film Scores, TV, Video Game and Broadway Records

What's in this soundtrack vinyl section?

This soundtrack vinyl section covers film music, TV scores, video game music, musicals and even a few advertising jingles. Film music makes up most of it, from classic Hollywood scores by Miklos Rozsa and Maurice Jarre to the modern work of Hans Zimmer. Vinyl and movies have a long shared history: for decades the soundtrack LP was one of the few ways to relive a film at home, and its cover often reused the poster, which makes these records great collectibles today.

Each record page compares offers from several partner stores, whether that's a standard pressing, a color variant, an anniversary edition or a box set. Prices for the same score can vary a lot from one edition to the next, so it helps to see them all in one place before you buy.

Score, song compilation or re-recording: choosing the right movie soundtrack LP

First, check what's actually on the record. "Soundtrack" can mean the composer's score or a compilation of songs heard in the film, and some movies have both, sold separately. Also watch for re-recordings: many budget film music records feature the themes played by a different orchestra rather than the recording used in the movie. The words "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" and the names of the original composer and orchestra settle the question.

On the label side, Mondo, Waxwork Records and Death Waltz Recording Co. turned soundtracks into collector's items, with illustrated sleeves and limited color vinyl, especially for horror and genre films. Music On Vinyl reissues many film scores too, while Data Discs and iam8bit are go-to names for video game music.

Essential soundtracks to own on vinyl

Ennio Morricone's "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (1966) and "Once Upon a Time in the West" belong in any collection. John Williams gave us "Jaws", "Star Wars" (1977) and "E.T.", while Vangelis defined a sci-fi mood with "Blade Runner". For jazz fans, Miles Davis's "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud" (1958) works as a standalone album, and plenty of listeners know it without ever having seen the Louis Malle film.
