New Metal Vinyl Releases: Color Variants, Labels and Smart Buys

What's in the new metal records section

Metal has a strong presence on vinyl today, and this page of new metal vinyl releases reflects it: new albums from active bands, reissued classics, live records and box sets. You'll see veterans like AC/DC, Alice in Chains, Anathema and Autopsy next to cult 1980s heavy metal names such as Tokyo Blade and Asian bands like Chthonic from Taiwan and Coldrain from Japan. The 12-inch format does justice to cover art, a big part of metal culture, and plenty of fans buy the LP even when they stream the album.

Color vinyl, splatter or picture disc?

A new metal album rarely comes out in just one version. Labels often press the same record in several colors, each a limited run and sometimes tied to a specific outlet: the label webshop, the band's store or a particular retailer. For listening, black vinyl is the safe choice; solid colors usually sound fine too, while picture discs put looks first and tend to be noisier.

Before buying, read the listing: number of discs, lyric insert, gatefold or single jacket, download code. For reissues, check whether it's a remaster, a remix or a straight repress of the original master, since fans of heavy metal and thrash metal are often attached to the original mix.

Standard black: cheapest and most often repressed
Color or splatter: limited runs aimed at collectors
Picture disc: great object, rarely the best sound
Box set or deluxe edition: bonus material, booklet, sometimes a live album

Metal labels to follow for upcoming releases

New metal albums come out on Fridays, with pre-orders often opening months before. Following a handful of labels covers most new metal records: Nuclear Blast and Century Media for heavy, thrash and melodic metal, Metal Blade for a very broad roster, Season of Mist for black metal and the avant-garde, Relapse Records for death metal and grind, Peaceville for doom and classic death metal, Napalm Records for symphonic and power metal. Anniversary reissues of classics like Metallica's "Master of Puppets" (1986) keep coming back too.

Comparing prices on new metal vinyl

The price of a new metal record can vary a lot depending on the variant and the store. Here you can compare offers from several partner stores for each release, then click through to the one you prefer. If you're after a limited color, pre-order it, because those often sell out before release day. If only the music matters, standard black vinyl is usually cheaper and stays in stock longer, which gives you time to compare.

Frequently asked questions

How do I avoid missing a limited metal pressing?

Follow the label and the band, since limited variants open for pre-order months ahead and often sell out fast. Also note which store holds each exclusive color. For a standard edition there's no rush: you can wait for release day and compare prices between partner stores.

Does colored metal vinyl sound worse than black?

Usually the difference is small on a well-pressed solid-color record. Black vinyl is still considered slightly quieter, and splatter or marbled effects can add a little surface noise. Picture discs are the only format that clearly sounds worse; people buy them mostly as collectibles.

What day do new metal albums come out?

Friday, like all music releases worldwide. The official date applies to vinyl too, though some stores receive their copies a few days later. Pre-ordering puts you near the front of the line when stock arrives, which matters most for limited variants.

Why does one metal album come in so many versions?

Labels create variants for collectors and to give different stores their own exclusives. The music is usually identical; only the vinyl color, run size and sometimes bonus material change. Read the description of each offer so you know exactly which version you are buying.
