Christmas on vinyl: When the warmth of the stylus awakens the holiday magic
From carols to classics: A century of Christmas records
Christmas music and the vinyl record share a deeply intertwined history. As early as the 1930s, the first 78 rpm carols were vying for a place in Anglo-Saxon homes, but everything changed in 1942 when Bing Crosby cut 'White Christmas' for Decca, a single that would go on to become the best-selling piece of recorded music of all time. In the post-war era, the golden age of crooners turned Christmas into an unmissable recording event: Nat King Cole immortalised 'The Christmas Song' on Capitol in 1946, Frank Sinatra released 'Christmas Songs by Sinatra' on Columbia, while Dean Martin and Ella Fitzgerald delivered one timeless standard after another. In France, Tino Rossi had the entire nation singing along to 'Petit Papa Noël' as early as 1946, a record that has bridged generations. Vinyl became the cherished medium for these suspended moments gathered around the Christmas tree.
Landmark albums every collector should know
No discussion of Christmas on vinyl would be complete without tipping our hats to Phil Spector's 'A Christmas Gift for You' (1963), a Wall of Sound masterpiece where Darlene Love and The Ronettes electrify seasonal standards. That same decade, Vince Guaraldi composed the soundtrack for 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' (1965) on Fantasy Records, a perfect marriage of cool jazz and childhood innocence. The 1970s brought a soulful reinterpretation with 'The Jackson 5 Christmas Album' on Motown and the essential 'A Motown Christmas' compilation (1973). We must also mention 'Elvis' Christmas Album' (RCA, 1957), a monument of festive rock'n'roll, the cult classic 'Christmas' by Low (1999) for indie aesthetes, and Sufjan Stevens' sumptuous 'Songs for Christmas' box sets. More recently, the soul revival of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and John Legend's collaborations with Capitol Studios prove that the genre continues to inspire highly sought-after pressings.
