For Possession, the 16th album by Ty Segall, he sets the orchestra turning in his head with an unchanging vision of certain typically American stories, a quest channeled into ten uninterrupted bangers. A year and a half after the sharp identity opus of his song cycle Three Bells, Ty has teleported to the deepest depths of his psychic entrails, discovering new inspired sounds at every turn. With lyrics co-written by a longtime collaborator, filmmaker Matt Yoka, Ty’s shimmering rhythmic arrangements move with a fresh scansion, inviting sweeps of strings and brass to continue the charge with precision. Rich in singing guitars and wizardly brass riffing languidly on the shores of Ty’s harmonious vocal chorus, Possession contains some of Ty’s most inspired songs to date.
