This album marks the beginning of the Brazilian inspiration for saxophonist Stan Getz. It is undoubtedly less known than the result of his collaboration with João Gilberto two years later, but it is historic. Considered the ambassador of bossa in the USA, Getz was in truth a trailblazer: the excellent guitarist Charlie Byrd, who returned from a tour in South America, introduced him to this new music. Jazz Samba stems from this shared discovery. The two musicians blend their knowledge with another musical complexity, with different harmonies and tempos. They cover “Desafinado” and “Samba Triste,” and Charlie Byrd composes his own samba. Their version of “Desafinado” becomes a hit in the United States, and the entire album turns into a bestseller. Jazz gained a new family, and Brazilian music became the key to conquering the American market, and thus the world.
