“Kronbruden” (The Crown Princess) by Ture Rangström remains one of the most frequently performed works in Swedish musical theatre. Set in Dalarna at the end of the 19th century, the story tells of the love rivalry between the young Mats and Kersti, whose families are in conflict — a Swedish version of “Romeo and Juliet.” Rangström’s setting of August Strindberg’s play, which already incorporates its own musical elements, gives it a powerful and still highly effective form. The main roles are sung by Markus Pettersson (Mats) and Elisabet Strid (Kersti). Maria Streijffert performs Kersti’s mother, Karl Peter Eriksson her father, Caspar Engdahl the sacristan and Katarina Karnéus Brita. The cast also includes Mats Almgren, Ingemar Andersson, Hannah Körner and Åsa Thyllman, as well as Frida Engström, My Wegnelius Jarlstedt, Philip Engström and Åke Zetterström. The musicians are members of the Men’s Chorus of the Gothenburg Opera Chorus, the Opera Youth Chorus and the Gothenburg Opera Orchestra, conducted by David Björkman.
