Double String Trios presents three major works for trios for two strings, composed by John McGuire between 2012 and 2021 and conducted by Axel Lindner. This project began when Walter Zimmermann asked Bernd Härpfer of Initiative Musik und Informatik Köln – GIMIK e.V. to arrange a world premiere as part of a concert celebrating McGuire’s 80th birthday. McGuire’s musical roots lie in the postwar electronic studios of Cologne, shaped by his studies with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Krzysztof Penderecki, and grounded in the tradition of European serialism. Working with synthesizers capable of generating up to 1,800 pulses per second, he developed music of crystalline harmony, shaped by the ear into a universe of fluid continuities between different points. Transposed to string instruments, this music acquires infinite complexity, imbued with the richness and imperfections inherent to the musicians and their acoustic techniques. Conceived as two string trios facing each other in an antiphonal dialogue, the music combines the spatial thinking of the studio with the older traditions of divided ensembles, unfolding in Fibonacci-like grandeur, with rotating tempi, time signature changes, and continuous harmonic transposition.
