When an artist follows trends, the term "electric" can sound like a gimmick. But with Donald Byrd, it's a natural evolution. On "Electric Byrd", the electronic textures become the organic extension of his inimitable lyricism, never artificial, always personal. With Duke Pearson on electric piano and the subtle rhythmic virtuosity of Airto Moreira, the album unfolds as a series of striking soundscapes. The moods flow fluidly from expressive trumpet solos to rich and complex ensemble passages, through elaborate rhythms, creating a deeply cohesive listening experience. From the fresh and airy woodwinds of "Estavanico" to the understated brilliance of drummer Mickey Roker on "Essence", "Electric Byrd" is atmospheric jazz fusion of exceptional imagination and immersion.
