There is often a clear distinction made between the practice of improvisation and the practice of Western art music. One is considered spontaneous, risky, and in the moment, while the other is seen as the art of perfection, reproduction, and interpretation. The Collectif Trytone believes, like Nadia Boulanger, that no clear distinction should separate them. Although Bach's writing is undoubtedly at the pinnacle of human artistic activity, why should it be considered untouchable? Even the return since the 1970s to a "historically informed interpretation" emphasizing research, sources, and interpretation on period instruments does not guarantee any definitive answers about Bach's sound world.
