Although there had been aborted attempts at live performances in the early 1980s, this concert is universally regarded as the true live debut of COIL. With a line-up consisting of John Balance, Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson, Thighpaulsandra and Ossian Brown, COIL took to the RFH stage dressed in their custom-made fluffy polar fleece suits to perform a supremely hypnotic set, somewhat reminiscent of their landmark release Time Machines, but adding a variation and tension largely absent from that drone masterpiece. Balance’s vocal performance on “Queens of the Circulating Library” is still a very controlled affair but effective and quite different from his later manic outbursts. The show itself, as well as the CD release in 2003, long sold out and now highly sought after, were extremely well received and became the cornerstone of a rapid succession of COIL tours over the four short years that followed until Balance’s untimely death. This very first double vinyl edition of this fantastic historical document of the COIL experience has been fully supervised by surviving member Thighpaulsandra and is now available on the Retractor label, presented in a sumptuous gatefold sleeve and pressed on 180g vinyl. It is distributed worldwide via Cargo. The Royal Festival Hall, April 2, 2000: “The industrial use of semen will revolutionize humanity”
