With Renaud (1783), Sacchini made his debut on the Paris stage. Criticism from the supporters of Gluck and Piccinni—his rivals—came from all sides. And yet Renaud was a success. Sacchini then became Marie Antoinette’s new favorite. Encouraged by the public, who saw him as one of the best composers of the moment, he enriched the Opéra repertoire with several masterpieces. Some would remain on stage for many years, such as Renaud, performed almost without interruption until 1799 and revived in 1815.
