With The Sirens, saxophonist Chris Potter signs his first album as leader for ECM. A talented musician, Chris Potter has built over the years an impressive discography rich in around a hundred appearances as a sideman and 15 albums as a leader. He has collaborated with musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Ray Brown, John Scofield, Dave Douglas, and has worked within the Mingus Big Band. Potter recorded on ECM with his mentor Dave Holland, with Steve Swallow and Paul Motian. For the occasion, he composed a work of beautiful melodies and shifting moods, inspired by Homer’s Odyssey, both in its epic dimension and in its timeless humanity. These pieces are served by the virtuosic subtlety of a remarkably structured group comprising, in addition to Potter on tenor and soprano saxophones and bass clarinet, Craig Taborn on piano, David Virelles on prepared piano, celesta and harmonium, Larry Grenadier on double bass and Eric Harland on drums. Potter’s lyrical phrasing is supported by a remarkable rhythm section full of dynamism and inventiveness, while the keyboards cast patches of shimmering color.
