In an ever-evolving music landscape, where vinyl is experiencing a true revival, an innovative recycling initiative complements this trend. Key Production recently relaunched its recycling program for unplayable vinyls — and CDs — with the support of independent UK record stores. This initiative aims to divert damaged records from landfills and give them a second life.
A Relaunched Sustainable Program
Initially launched in 2020, this recycling program was paused due to COVID-19 pandemic constraints.
However, on the occasion of World Recycling Day, celebrated every March 18, the initiative is making a comeback, determined to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste generated by the music industry.
Independent record stores such as Rough Trade and Sister Ray will actively participate in testing this new service, which will accept all kinds of vinyls and CDs, regardless of their condition. Record packaging will also be included in this initiative.

An Environmental Challenge
Vinyls and CDs are primarily made from plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for vinyls and polycarbonate for CDs. Unfortunately, these materials can take hundreds of years to decompose in landfills, posing a major environmental challenge. Rough Trade Director, Lawrence Montgomery, stated that providing a recycling solution is not only sustainable but also beneficial for the product lifecycle. This initiative is not limited to simply recovering damaged vinyls; it also fits into a broader vision of sustainability within the music industry.
A Vinyl Sales Boom
The relaunch of this program comes at an opportune time, as vinyl sales continue to rise. Reports indicate a nearly 15% growth in vinyl sales during the first nine months of 2023.
Despite the dominance of streaming services, vinyl asserts itself as an important medium, attracting new and old fans looking for an authentic listening experience. This return to more sustainable forms of consumption is a good complement to the general enthusiasm for vinyl.

Recycle to Create
Music fans who wish to recycle their old vinyls or CDs can send them directly to Key Production for recycling. The materials recovered through this initiative will be reused to manufacture new products, such as pipes, flooring, garden furniture, and even traffic cones.
If you wish to use their service, here is the address to send your damaged vinyls and CDs:

The vinyl and CD recycling program invites music fans to actively participate in preserving our planet while celebrating their passion for music.
In this sense, recycling is not only an ecological necessity but also an opportunity to renew our connection with music and support responsible practices.
