About

Original Bleach and In Utero pressings swing widely, with scarce copies drawing the sharpest collector attention.

Across three studio albums, Bleach (1989), Nevermind (1991) and In Utero (1993), Nirvana moved from Sub Pop grit to DGC scale without sanding away the tension in Cobain's writing. For vinyl collectors, the catalogue splits between studio LPs, posthumous live sets, radio broadcasts and high variance original pressings. Bleach is especially volatile, while In Utero and MTV Unplugged In New York remain core listening copies for turntables.

01Studio

The $606.17 Bleach bill

At Reciprocal Recording in Seattle, Jack Endino billed 30 studio hours at $606.17. Jason Everman fronted the money and received a guitar credit, although he did not play on the album.

02Take

Polly came from the Smart sessions

The “Polly” on Nevermind came from April 1990 at Smart Studios in Madison, with Chad Channing. Butch Vig kept that take while the rest of the album was remade at Sound City.

03Couch

Something in the Way in the control room

At Sound City, the full-band take was not working. Butch Vig set up mics in the control room, shut off the phone and air-conditioning, and recorded Kurt Cobain on the couch in three takes.

04Secret

The fake Simon Ritchie band

For In Utero, Steve Albini booked Pachyderm Studio as the “Simon Ritchie Band,” a nod to Sid Vicious’s real name, to keep fans and press away from Cannon Falls.

Nevermind’s Pasadena pool

The Nevermind cover was photographed by Kirk Weddle at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center in Pasadena. The baby was Spencer Elden, only a few months old during the underwater shoot.
