Tortoise's very first self-titled album incorporates numerous musical styles and influences, combining them into a very distinct sound. So distinct that shortly after the release of this record, they were recognized as the leaders of a new musical movement. Tortoise exploits the recording studio in the sense that it uses the recording process as a compositional tool or a "sixth member," thus creating an unlimited setting for making music. Recorded at Idful Studios by John McEntire.
