Slick Rick, whose real name is Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters, is a British-American rapper who gained fame within the group Doug E. Fresh & The Get Fresh Crew in the mid-80s. Their tracks "La Di Da Di" and "The Show" are considered hip-hop classics. His first album, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, including the hit track "Children's Story," was released in 1988. Behind Bars, his third studio album, was released in 1994 on Def Jam Recordings. It reached number 51 on the Billboard 200 and number 11 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album was recorded during a prison release, with some tracks built around vocal takes recorded years earlier. Additional recordings took place during a period of work release in 1993. The album spawned two singles showcasing Slick Rick's unique storytelling style: "Behind Bars" and "Sittin' in My Car." The production was handled by Warren G, Greg Nice, Paul Huston, Easy Mo Bee, and Slick Rick himself. Pete Rock produced the remixes of "I'm Captive" and "Get a Job," and The Large Professor did the remix of "It's a Boy." There are also collaborations with Nice & Smooth on "Let's All Get Down," Warren G on "Behind Bars," and hip-hop veteran Doug E. Fresh on "Sittin' in My Car." The influential hip-hop and lifestyle magazine Vibe praised the album, noting that "Rick's legendary street talent and his sparkling, charming spirit shine through even behind bars." Behind Bars is available on black vinyl with a booklet.
