Ruby Rushton’s fifth studio album, Legacy!, written by leader Tenderlonious and keyboardist Aidan Shepherd, opens a new chapter for this extremely influential British jazz group. Previously, the band, which also includes trumpeter Nick Walters and drummer Tim Carnegie, worked live in a single take, thus avoiding overdubs. For Legacy!, the four musicians decided to combine their virtuosity with Tenderlonious’s studio production expertise. Each composition is accompanied by brass and flute lines layered over the melodies, in addition to the original live takes. The result is impressive; the listener discovers a broader sonic spectrum than on Ruby Rushton’s previous albums.
