Originally, “Symptômes” was an autobiographical account tracing Devin Daniels’ journey through mental health via his musical compositions. “I composed these pieces during the hardest period of my life, between 2018 and 2023. In 2017, I had an experience in Boston that triggered a schizo-affective reaction in me. I’m schizophrenic now. I’ve been hearing voices for nearly ten years. Composing pieces is the kind of thing that lifts my spirits, that allows me to forget all that.” Devin also regularly works on the Los Angeles music scene as a bandleader and studio musician. A graduate of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA, he has played in bands with musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Joel Ross, Gerald Clayton, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and many others. Although Devin is not present on social media and therefore may not currently enjoy the same level of recognition as other artists in the music world, he is highly respected and appreciated in many circles of the Los Angeles music scene.
