As indicated on its iconic sleeve, Guru’s Jazzmatazz Vol.1 (MC and member of Gangstarr alongside DJ Premier) is “an experimental fusion of hip hop and jazz, presented by Guru.” This album was born from Guru’s unconditional love for jazz and was one of the first to fuse a live jazz band, rap and R&B artists, and hip hop beat-based production. The jazz group that recorded on this album is nothing less than a kind of jazz All-Star band, with icons of the genre such as Donald Byrd, Courtney Pine, Lonnie Liston Smith, Branford Marsalis, Ronny Jordan and Roy Ayers. On vocals, alongside Guru, are contributions from Carleen Anderson, N'Dea Davenport (Brand New Heavies), Dee C Lee (The Style Council) and French rapper MC Solaar. This 180GR blue vinyl reissue, limited to 5000 copies, is being released to mark the 25th anniversary of this iconic album’s release.
