Haruomi Hosono, musician, producer, and pioneering Japanese composer, founding member of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Happy End, releases Yours Sincerely, his 23rd studio album and first collection of new music in over seven years. His late renaissance continues to attract new fans and influence a generation of Western artists — Mac DeMarco, Vampire Weekend, Harry Styles, Ginger Root — in a remarkable circular exchange with the mid-century American music that shaped him. At 78, Hosono remains in motion: "I feel an increasing curiosity about the unknown music that my new self will create, while embracing the music of my old self — as if I now carry two musical worlds within me." Through arrangements that range from tender psych-folk to bubbling avant-garde pop, he contemplates the concept of a maternal force that envelops the Earth — "humanity's understanding of the unconditional love of those who give us life" — and taps into deeply buried instincts: compassion, mercy, things we rarely touch upon in our daily lives.
