At the small school in Ménaka in Mali, LEILA GOBI surprised those around her with an extraordinary voice. Her family immediately tried to discourage her from pursuing a career, concerned about the geographical distance separating Ménaka from Bamako. But after having been the chorister for several orchestras, LEILA founded, against all odds, her own group, on the verge of becoming a star throughout sub-Saharan Africa, then touring in Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Guinea and Senegal. Her second album was recorded at the Hampathe Bah studio in Bamako, with overdubs and mixing carried out later in Bamako, New York and Los Angeles. Floating above afro-beats inviting trance, this other voice from the sub-Saharan desert moves our hearts.
