Slow, unpretentious, and largely instrumental, Orphans finds Art Feynman turned inward. Designed as "music for doing other things," the album is meant to accompany daily activities, coloring the atmosphere without demanding sustained attention. It flows through space like wind chimes — less something to follow than something to feel. Where Feynman's past work often relied on complex grooves and dense interactions, Orphans is disarmingly tranquil. One can almost imagine Feynman hunched over a 4-track, sketching melodies on a small Casio. "Soft Reminder" opens with a gentle organ line, straddling melancholy and curiosity. "Soup Song" evokes a homemade minimalism that recalls the exploratory spirit of A Rainbow in Curved Air by Terry Riley. "Always In Need of Something" echoes the playful and searching side of Francis Bebey. At the center of the album, "Ice Bath," one of the few vocal moments, offers a subtle thesis: "It slowed me down / That's what I needed / For a new beginning." The record closes with "Plastic Flowers" and its vocoder-softened vocals: "To trick the eye but still touch the heart." A line that encapsulates the album's ethos — modest recordings, almost illusory in their simplicity, yet with undeniable emotional resonance.
