What does unconventional music mean here?

On Vinyles.com, unconventional music covers records that escape the usual genres: ambient, modern piano music, experimental electronics, texture-driven jazz and hybrid projects. It is not a single style but a family of records that put sound exploration ahead of song form. Artists you will find here include Brian Eno, Nils Frahm and Squarepusher.

Why are these records often limited editions?

Most of them come out on independent labels that press according to expected demand, often a few hundred or a few thousand copies. A repress is never guaranteed. That is why it pays to compare offers as soon as a record interests you, before partner stores run out of stock.

Which record should I start with?

Talking Heads' "Remain in Light" and Brian Eno's "Ambient 1: Music for Airports" are two accessible entry points, one rhythmic, the other contemplative. For something more recent, Nils Frahm's albums blend piano and electronics in a very approachable way. Listen to a sample first: this music is not for everyone, and that is part of its appeal.

Do I need a high-end turntable for this music?

No, but a properly set up turntable and a clean record make a real difference. These albums often include very quiet passages where surface noise is more audible. Keep discs clean, check the grading on used copies and store LPs upright in anti-static inner sleeves to keep them quiet over time.

Unconventional Music Vinyl: Records That Don't Fit Any Box

What counts as unconventional music on vinyl?

This page gathers unconventional music vinyl: records that sit outside the usual genre boxes. Expect ambient and modern piano music, experimental electronics, texture-driven jazz, percussion records and hybrid projects. The catalog gives a good sense of the range, from Brian Eno to Nils Frahm, Squarepusher, Seefeel, Colleen, Shabaka Hutchings and Penguin Cafe. What they share is an approach where sound matters more than song structure, and albums meant to be heard closely, one side at a time.

Buying offbeat records: tips from the shop floor

This music mostly comes out on independent labels that care about the object: gatefold sleeves, heavy card stock, inserts and sometimes colored vinyl. Runs are limited and represses are never guaranteed, especially for newer artists. If a record catches your ear, compare offers sooner rather than later. For classics such as Brian Eno's albums, several editions coexist, from recent reissues to used original pressings, so compare them before choosing.

The labels worth following are well known: Warp for Squarepusher, Erased Tapes for Nils Frahm, Kranky for drone and ambient. Following a label is still the most reliable way to find artists close to the ones you already love, and their releases show up regularly among the new arrivals listed by the partner stores compared here.
