Requiem Vinyl Records: Masses, Requiems and Passions on LP
Masses, requiems and passions: what this collection covers
This collection brings together requiem vinyl records, masses and passions, the three great forms of sacred choral music. A mass sets the fixed texts of the liturgy (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei). A requiem is the mass for the dead. A passion tells the story of Christ's death from one of the gospels, with a narrator, soloists, choir and orchestra. These works often run over an hour, so on vinyl they fill several sides or a full box set, usually with a libretto.
Essential sacred choral works to own on vinyl
Johann Sebastian Bach towers over the repertoire with the Mass in B minor, the St Matthew Passion and the St John Passion. Mozart's Requiem, left unfinished at his death in 1791 and completed by his pupil Süssmayr, is one of the most recorded sacred works. Next come Verdi's Requiem, Brahms's A German Requiem, Fauré's gentler Requiem and Beethoven's Missa solemnis.
The 20th century added Britten's War Requiem, which weaves Wilfred Owen's war poems into the Latin mass for the dead, and, more recently, the sacred music of Arvo Pärt, including his "Passio." Among performers, Karl Richter's Bach on Archiv Produktion remains a historic benchmark, while conductors like Raphaël Pichon and his ensemble Pygmalion champion period-instrument performances today.
Box sets, reissues and used copies: what to check
Sacred choral music swings from hushed pianissimos to full tutti, so a scratched or dusty record shows up immediately in the quiet passages. Condition is everything on used copies. The major classical labels, Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Philips, Erato, Harmonia Mundi and Archiv Produktion, issued these works in well-made box sets that often turn up secondhand.
- Make sure the box is complete: every disc plus the libretto
- Check condition on every side, especially quiet passages
- Decide between period instruments and a full modern orchestra
- Compare a reissue against the price of an original pressing
Comparing prices on sacred music LPs
Vinyles.com compares prices from several partner stores for the same record, whether new, reissued or used. With sacred works that exist in dozens of recordings, it lets you line up different conductors and editions before choosing. Always check the conductor, choir and orchestra on the listing: that is what separates one Mozart Requiem from another, far more than the cover art.
