What is yé-yé music?

Yé-yé was the wave of young French pop singers in the 1960s, inspired by British and American rock and pop. Sylvie Vartan, Françoise Hardy, France Gall and Johnny Hallyday are its best-known names. Their hits first came out on 7-inch EPs, which collectors now seek out.

What is vintage French variety music?

It is French-language popular song from past decades: 1950s music hall and cabaret, 1960s yé-yé, then the mainstream pop of the 1970s and 1980s. Artists include Edith Piaf, Juliette Gréco, Line Renaud, Sylvie Vartan, Enrico Macias and Jeanne Mas. Many of its 1960s hits first appeared on 7-inch records.

What is a 10-inch LP?

A 10-inch LP is a 33 RPM record, 25 cm across, smaller than the usual 12-inch album. The format was common for French albums in the 1950s, especially early chanson records. It holds fewer songs than a 12-inch and stands out on a shelf.

How do I check an old 7-inch before buying?

Look at the playing surface first: deep scratches, dull patches or visible wear point to heavy play. Ask whether it skips or crackles loudly. Then check the sleeve and the center label, which identify the edition. Finally, compare the price with other offers for the same record.

French Retro Variety

Francophone retro variety evokes an era when songs dominated the airwaves and captured hearts with their simplicity and charm. These tracks, often associated with collective memory, continue to accompany generations long after their initial release.

Artists like Édith Piaf, Charles Trenet or Gilbert Bécaud shaped a now essential repertoire, carried by universal lyrics and immediately recognizable melodies.

These records transport listeners into the ambiance of a cabaret, a popular dance hall, or a concert venue from the last century. They bear witness to a musical tradition where emotion and sincerity held a central place, offering a journey into the heart of Francophone heritage.

The 1960s were the era of the four-track 7-inch EP, with two songs per side and a photo sleeve. The 12-inch LP then became the album standard, while the two-track 7-inch single remained the format for hits into the 1980s.

Period pressings: what to check

Vintage records are mostly found used, and condition varies widely: many were played on home record players with worn styluses. Inspect both sides, ask whether the record skips, and check the sleeve, which is often worn at the corners or written on. Labels of the era, such as Vogue, Philips or Barclay, help date a pressing:
