French Punk Vinyl: Alternative Rock, Hardcore and Today's Scene
French punk vinyl from 1977 to today
French punk vinyl tells the story of a scene that has always done things its own way. Métal Urbain put out its first single in 1977, and the '80s brought what the French call rock alternatif: Bérurier Noir, Ludwig von 88, Les Garçons Bouchers, La Souris Déglinguée and Parabellum, releasing records on independent labels with a fiercely self-reliant ethic. Melodic punk and hardcore followed with Les Sheriff and Burning Heads, both formed in the '80s, then Tagada Jones in the '90s and Guerilla Poubelle in the 2000s.
This page gathers French-language punk and hardcore records listed on Vinyles.com. For each one, you can compare offers from several partner stores, whether it's a reissue, a new album or a limited color pressing.
French punk labels and collector tips
A few labels carried this scene. Bondage Records released Bérurier Noir, Boucherie Productions, founded by François Hadji-Lazaro, released Les Garçons Bouchers and other alternative bands, and Guerilla Asso, tied to Guerilla Poubelle, has championed DIY punk since the 2000s. These outfits usually press small runs, with occasional reissues of out-of-print records.
'80s originals mostly turn up on the used market, and some 12-inch EPs and singles have climbed in value. For listening, reissues are the smart buy; for collecting, disc and sleeve condition come first.
- Check the pressing year: '80s original or later reissue
- Look for the original insert or lyric sheet
- Compare limited color editions with the black vinyl version
- Follow independent labels, whose small runs sell out quickly
