French Metal Vinyl: Fusion, Heavy and Black Metal From France

French metal on vinyl: what this collection covers

This page gathers French metal vinyl and records from the wider French-speaking scene: 1990s fusion, early heavy metal, death metal and a very active black metal underground. What links them is where the bands come from rather than one style. The catalog includes Loudblast and Misanthrope, key names in French death metal, alongside black metal acts like Pensées Nocturnes and Crépuscule d'Hiver. Many of these records come out in short runs on independent labels.

From 1980s pioneers to French-language fusion

In the 1980s, Trust led the way with "Répression" in 1980, followed by heavy metal bands such as Sortilège and Warning. The 1990s brought a distinctly French fusion scene mixing metal, rap and hardcore, sung in French: Lofofora, Mass Hysteria, No One Is Innocent, then Pleymo and the nu metal wave. For American listeners, think of it as a local answer to Rage Against the Machine, with lyrics in French.

Since the 2000s, Gojira has become one of the best-known French metal bands worldwide, with albums like "From Mars to Sirius" in 2005, and in 2024 it performed at the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony. French black metal, with Alcest, Blut Aus Nord and Deathspell Omega, has also earned an international following, and many of its records are prized by collectors on vinyl.

Pressings, reissues and labels to watch

The 1990s fusion albums came out mostly on CD, so original vinyl copies are rare and recent reissues are often the only way to get them on LP. On the extreme metal side, independent labels release limited, sometimes numbered, runs that sell out quickly. Two French labels stand out: Season of Mist, based in Marseille, and Listenable Records, which released Gojira's "From Mars to Sirius" and reissued the band's first albums.

Comparing offers on French metal LPs

Vinyles.com doesn't sell records. It compares offers from partner stores for the same album, new or used. For a small-run French metal release, that's a quick way to see who still has it and at what price. The links at the top of the page lead to new releases and pre-orders in the metal section, handy for following these bands without missing a limited edition.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the essential French metal bands?

Key names include Trust for 1980s hard rock, Lofofora, Mass Hysteria and No One Is Innocent for 1990s fusion, Gojira for modern metal, and Alcest or Blut Aus Nord for black metal. Loudblast and Misanthrope shaped French death metal. Start with one album per era, then compare the editions available on vinyl.

What is French metal fusion?

French metal fusion is a scene that emerged in the 1990s, blending metal, rap, hardcore and sometimes electronics, usually with French lyrics. Lofofora, Mass Hysteria, No One Is Innocent and later Pleymo are its main figures. Politically charged lyrics are one of its signatures.

Does Gojira sing in French?

No, Gojira sings in English, even though the band comes from southwestern France. This collection covers French and French-speaking bands in the broad sense, whether they sing in French, like Lofofora or Mass Hysteria, or in English, like Gojira. The focus is the scene, not the language.

Is French black metal worth exploring on vinyl?

Yes. French black metal has a strong international reputation, from the atmospheric side of Alcest to the darker, more dissonant sound of Blut Aus Nord and Deathspell Omega. Many releases come out in limited runs on independent labels, so it pays to compare offers before they sell out.
