Electronic Compilation Vinyl: Classic Series, DJ Mixes and Buying Tips
What is a vinyl compilation in electronic music?
A vinyl compilation gathers tracks on one record around a common thread: a label, a DJ, an era or a mood. In electronic music, it is a key format. Many tracks first came out on 12-inch singles that can be hard to find, so an electronic compilation on vinyl collects them and opens the door to artists, labels or entire scenes. This page brings these records together, from historical anthologies to lounge selections, with offers from several partner stores to compare.
The main types of electronic compilations
Compilations serve different purposes. Some trace a label's history, others present a DJ's selection or capture the atmosphere of a venue. Knowing which family a record belongs to helps you pick the right one. Label anthologies and retrospectives tend to be the most documented, often with detailed liner notes, while mood compilations are made for continuous listening at home or in the background.
- Label anthology: a record company's catalog
- DJ series: a guest artist's selection, volume after volume
- Mood compilation: lounge, chill-out, bar or hotel music
- Retrospective: a scene or style at a given time
- Artist best-of: an artist's key tracks
Reference series worth knowing
In 1992, Warp released "Artificial Intelligence," a compilation featuring Autechre among others that framed electronic music made for listening rather than dancing. From 1995, Berlin label !K7 ran the DJ-Kicks series, handing each volume to a different artist. In Cologne, Kompakt turned its annual "Total" and "Pop Ambient" series into eagerly awaited releases.
Among retrospectives, Soul Jazz Records devoted its "Deutsche Elektronische Musik" anthology to 1970s German experimental rock and electronic music. Fans of mellower sounds know the Café del Mar series, born in Ibiza, as well as the Paris-associated Buddha-Bar and Hôtel Costes series. In the UK, Ministry of Sound, a London club that became a label, also built much of its catalog on compilations.
