What is a sonata in classical music?

A sonata is a work for a solo instrument, often piano, or for an instrument with piano accompaniment. It usually has three or four contrasting movements. The form settled in the Classical era with Haydn and Mozart, and Beethoven made it a major field of experimentation with his 32 piano sonatas.

Are mono recordings worth it for sonatas?

Yes. For solo piano or a duo, mono captures the instrument very well, and many reference performances date from the 1950s. Choose a faithful mono reissue over artificial stereo. Stereo mainly adds a sense of space, which matters more in duos than in solo piano.

What is the difference between a sonata and a sonatina?

A sonatina is a small-scale sonata: shorter, technically simpler and often written for piano students. Clementi and Kuhlau wrote many of them. A sonata develops its themes further and can reach great complexity, as in Beethoven's late sonatas. Sonatinas rarely fill a whole LP on their own.

Q: Which Beethoven sonata cycle should I buy on vinyl?

There is no single answer, since each cycle reflects a temperament. Artur Schnabel made the very first in the 1930s, and Wilhelm Kempff recorded two for Deutsche Grammophon. You might start with a single album of the best-known sonatas to find the pianist whose approach speaks to you.

Sonatas immerse us in the heart of an intimate dialogue between instrument and composer, where classical form blends with infinite expressive richness. Whether for piano, violin, or cello, they offer a unique ground for exploration to the performer, combining structural rigor and freedom of expression.

This musical genre, listened to on a quality audio system, will reveal the purity of the melodic lines, the subtlety of the dynamics, and the harmonic depth, recreating the hushed and concentrated atmosphere of a chamber music hall.

Classical sonatas on vinyl: what this section covers

This page gathers classical sonata vinyl: solo piano sonatas, plus sonatas for violin and piano, cello and piano, and other duos. The sonata is an intimate instrumental form, usually in three or four movements, that often fits on one side of an LP. It is intimate music, made for attentive listening on good headphones or a solid system. The catalog mixes historic recordings with today's performers, such as violinist Julia Fischer and horn player Sarah Willis of the Berlin Philharmonic, who brings a less expected instrument to this repertoire.

Complete cycles or single albums, mono or stereo?

For the great cycles, such as Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, you can choose a complete box set, which follows a composer's evolution through one performer, or single albums of the best-known works. Artur Schnabel recorded the first complete Beethoven cycle in the 1930s, and Wilhelm Kempff recorded two for Deutsche Grammophon, first in mono, then in stereo. Both are available as reissues, far easier to find than original pressings.

Mono recordings from the 1950s are no compromise: for solo piano the sound image stays natural, and many reference performances date from that era. With used copies, check the slow movements, where any surface noise is immediately audible. For box sets, make sure every disc and the booklet are included before you buy.

Essential sonatas to own on vinyl

The repertoire is vast, from Domenico Scarlatti's hundreds of keyboard sonatas to the 20th century, by way of Haydn, who wrote several dozen. For a first collection, these works appear in nearly every great performer's discography, which makes it easy to compare different versions of the same piece side by side:

Beethoven: "Pathétique", "Moonlight", "Appassionata" and the late sonatas
Mozart: Piano Sonata K. 331 with its famous "Rondo alla turca"
Schubert: the late piano sonatas
Chopin's Sonata No. 2 with its funeral march, and Liszt's Sonata in B minor
Beethoven and Franck for violin sonatas, including the "Kreutzer" Sonata
