Hi Scores (30th Anniversary)
Boards of Canada

This category explores Ambient, an electronic genre focused on creating immersive and soothing atmospheres. Compositions prioritize sonic textures, enveloping layers, and subtle rhythms to establish a climate conducive to relaxation or reflection. Ideal for accompanying a quiet moment or fostering concentration.
Allow yourself to be enveloped by these soundscapes.
This collection of ambient vinyl records, part of the Electro genre, gathers music of textures, drones and space: from 1970s pioneers to current producers who blend synthesizers, piano, strings and field recordings. Ambient works beautifully on vinyl. Pieces are long and meant for continuous listening, and an LP side sets a slow pace, far from shuffle mode. For each record, you can compare offers from several partner stores, whether it's a new pressing, a reissue or a limited edition.
It starts with Brian Eno's "Ambient 1: Music for Airports" (1978), followed by his collaboration with Harold Budd, "The Plateaux of Mirror" (1980). In Germany, Tangerine Dream paved the way with "Phaedra" (1974). In the 90s, ambient met electronic music: The Orb's "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld" (1991), Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" (1992), Biosphere's "Substrata" (1997) and Boards of Canada's "Music Has the Right to Children" (1998).
The 2000s and 2010s brought William Basinski's "The Disintegration Loops", Stars of the Lid and Tim Hecker's "Ravedeath, 1972" (2011). Today, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Oneohtrix Point Never, Alessandro Cortini, Ben Frost and Huerco S. carry the genre forward. Several of these albums exist in different editions, single or double LP, original pressing or reissue, so compare the details of each offer, not just the price.
Ambient is a tough test for a pressing: very quiet passages and long drones expose surface noise and any off-center wobble. For used copies, condition matters above all. On the reissue side, 1980s Japanese ambient was rediscovered through Light in the Attic's "Kankyō Ongaku" compilation, and Hiroshi Yoshimura, notably with "Green" (1986), has seen new editions. Several labels are reliable references: Warp, Kranky, Touch, 12k, Erased Tapes and Kompakt with its Pop Ambient series.
The genre has many faces. Ambient techno keeps a soft electronic pulse, in the line of The Orb and Aphex Twin. Drone stretches notes into hypnosis, dark ambient explores heavier moods, and neoclassical ambient blends piano, strings and electronics, as with A Winged Victory for the Sullen or Shida Shahabi. On the melodic side, Tycho and Forest Swords bridge the gap to more rhythmic electronic music. To go further, the Ambient Techno sub-collection and the Mood collections round out the selection.
