An essential masterpiece of the 20th-century repertoire, The Rite of Spring is — let us not forget — a ballet, commissioned by Diaghilev, the master of the Ballets Russes, from Stravinsky for its premiere at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris on May 29, 1913. A huge scandal (essentially against Nijinsky’s choreography), the work triumphed 15 days later in concert form, never to leave the top of the bill worldwide again. Today, Teodor Currentzis, the enfant terrible of conducting, whose every performance generates a flood of commentary, sometimes even controversial, offers us his version. The entire music press praises his fiery temperament and constant inventiveness, which make him a major figure in conducting today. Bartabas chose this recording for his show, during which he presented “his” choreographed version with the horses of Stravinsky’s ballet.
