Initially released in 2004 on the highly influential Atavistic label, RADIALE makes its grand return, blending explosive energy, avant-jazz improvisation, and experimental rock in a historic collaboration. With saxophonist Ken Vandermark, bassist Nate McBride, and talented African American drummer Hamid Drake, this album exudes a slightly more exploratory atmosphere. The music is driven by hypnotic, circular rhythms as well as abrupt dynamic shifts, moving from stripped-down, almost suspended moments to sudden and dazzling explosions.
The baritone saxophone often functions more as a percussive force than as a melodic instrument, while the bass locks into distorted and repetitive figures and the drums maintain an unrelenting and rigorously controlled intensity. With astonishing covers of classic anthems of afro-futurism – the medley of Sun Ra "We Travel The Spaceways/Space is The Place," "Theme De Yo-Yo" by the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and "You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks" by Funkadelic – RADIALE has been widely appreciated in underground circles and has helped solidify Zu's reputation as one of the most innovative experimental groups in Europe. This album stands out as a coherent and immersive work intended for listeners ready to engage with music that challenges traditional structures and expectations.
