Formed in 1998, SWEETBACK is a meeting of three guys haunted by the libertarian and rebellious experiences of John Coltrane, Charles Mingus and Elvin Jones, and who are also already very busy blowing in Zenzile, killing their fingers in Lo'Jo and pounding skins in several rock bands in Angers. You now understand why it took them so many years before they could find the time to record a follow-up. Despite what their instruments might suggest, Raggy (sax), Kham (double bass) and Mehdi (drums) do not play jazz at all. At least not that purring, bloated jazz that long ago forgot its wild roots. The three men, for their part, have not forgotten where they come from: they have not forgotten the feeling they got when they first discovered the incendiary sounds of Fugazi, Red Snapper or Morphine. And their music has both the punk tension of the first, the groove of the second and the radiant class of the third. A little cinematic orchestra all on its own, SWEETBACK therefore shows on this second album all the facets of its personality: lyrical, furious, funky, punky, sensual, possessed... In the image of the insurgent character from the Melvin Van Peebles film that gives it its name, the Angers trio refuses codes and labels and is content to spit in the face of conventions this concentrate of half a century of music that it carries deep in its guts. Wherever they are, John, Charles and Elvin can be proud.
