The legendary artist and producer Tricky today announces the release of his new album, Different When It’s Silent, available on 17 July 2026 on False Idols. His fifteenth studio album and first solo release in six years, Different When It’s Silent is a direct and incisive record that reconnects with the distinctive sonic language that has defined Tricky’s work since his groundbreaking debut album, Maxinquaye, released in 1995. After its first airing by Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 6 Music, the first single, “Out Of Place”, arrives in triumphant fashion. A duet with his longtime collaborator Marta, the track pairs Marta’s restrained vocals with Tricky’s raw, almost punk energy. This contrast creates a powerful finale that captures the album’s raw intensity. Originally written for Marta’s album, “Out Of Place” was ultimately brought back by Tricky for Different When It’s Silent. Different When It’s Silent follows a prolific period of activity. Since Fall to Pieces in 2020, Tricky has released tracks under various pseudonyms, including the collaborative project Lonely Guest, the Fifteen Days project with producer Mike Theis under the name Theis Thaws, and last year’s joint album Out The Way with Marta, all released on his own label, False Idols. Yet the return to an album under his own name has taken on a whole new dimension. “For me, it was just a side project,” he explains. But after listening to the tracks, his manager, Alan McGee, felt they clearly belonged on a Tricky album. Recorded between Tricky’s home in France and sessions in Bristol, the album draws inspiration from the music scene that shaped him. The voice of Bristol singer Mitch Sanders, whose soulful falsetto runs through much of the album, plays a central role. Their rapport is built on shared musical roots and an instinctive chemistry that shines through in their performances. Across fourteen tracks, Tricky blends minimalist blues, dark electronica, distorted guitars and incisive hip-hop rhythms to create a sound that is both stripped-back and expansive. The album moves fluidly between styles while retaining the relentless experimentation that has defined his work for more than thirty years.
