Philip Glass (1937-*): String Quartet No. 1, String Quartet No. 2 “Company”, String Quartet No. 3 “Mishima”, String Quartet No. 4 “Buczack”, String Quartet No. 5, String Quartet No. 6, String Quartet No. 7, Happy Birthday Mr. Glass arranged by Tana Quartet. Repetitive and minimal music offers a hedonistic escape from the recent history of music, which has wished for it to be confiscated by musicologists. Just as the 20th century has led philosophy in the direction of the Sorbonnards, theater in the direction of theater practitioners, literature in the direction of academics, and poetry in the direction of pedants, without concern for the public, it has led music down the path of musicologists. However, just as a gynecologist is not the best person to talk about love, a musicologist is not the best person to talk about music. He talks about cooking. This cerebral evolution of music fits well within the Platonic order of things in which we have lived for two thousand years: little or no body, no passion or impulses, no instincts, just reasonable and reasoning reason, numbers, but above all, no pleasure. The Idea. Pleasure is guilty... Thus, for a long time, music has been the exclusive domain of professionals, as the saying goes. It took American freedom and its hedonism for us to turn our backs on the old ways. Michel Onfray
