They grew up in an old abandoned campsite that their family converted into a farm. It was in this unusual and innovative environment that Eva, Liza, Sarah and Hannah developed a creative frenzy. From a very young age, they were fascinated by the Beatles and the Marx Brothers, a passion their parents were eager to nurture with their collection of albums and films. A shared dream grew within the siblings, and they began to put their four completely different individualities to work in a fully cohesive musical group. Using the initials of their first names, the group created the acronym SHEL. Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza Holbrook like to say they are “four sisters, traveling the world, telling stories and sharing a dream.” At 10, Hannah began studying classical piano, improvisation and theory. The following year, Eva bought a mandolin at the instrument shop in their hometown, then, guided by her fearlessness, she explored her favorite genres, from classical to rock and beyond, honing her songwriting skills, which then became the heart of SHEL’s music. Sarah took up the violin, traveling throughout the Midwest, playing at talent shows and festivals. As for Liza, she began her musical career at the age of 6 on classical harp before changing direction, drawn in by rhythms: the djembe, drums and beat-boxing. “It’s a group of singers with incredible instrumental talent and a group of musicians with an incredible vocal attack,” says Craig Havighurst of Music City Roots. “Their music is full of allusions to their main influences: Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Harry Nilsson and the acoustic supergroup Strength In Numbers, but we’ve never heard anything like this before.” Recently based in Nashville, SHEL is currently recording their second album with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, who says of them: “I have never met a sibling group so talented, playing and working with such unity and cohesion. SHEL are exceptionally gifted musicians and singers, coupled with remarkable individuals. Their creativity literally left me speechless.”
