Primal Scream, previously cataloged as under-Velvet Underground, then under-Rolling Stones, has in recent years radicalized its approach to sound, and this notable change, largely due to the presence of Kevin Shields (ex-My Bloody Valentine) and Mani (ex-bassist of the Stone Roses), is a big part of the rising quality of its albums.
Continuing the electronic vein of "XTRMNTR" released in 2000, the alternative rock of "Evil Heat" is nothing less than delightful. In fact, one might think they hear the Stooges mating with the elite of contemporary electro artists, and the entirety of the album could be compared to a long hypnotic trance, provoked by an excessive intake of acid or ecstasy.
Some tracks, notwithstanding their rock classicism, lean towards the narcotic and frenzied warmth of hardcore techno (Miss Lucifer, Detroit), while Rise, Shull X, and City inaugurate a new genre, electro punk, all under very strong kraut rock influences (the tributes to Kraftwerk and Neu! multiply throughout the album).
Listening to "Evil Heat," it is clear that the future of rock is not found with the retrograde Oasis, nor in the childish nu metal of Limp Bizkit and their ilk, but rather with Primal Scream.
