In Patternmaster, the new album by tenor saxophonist Mark Turner leading his quartet, we find that very special balance between forms of unrestrained improvisation and constant control of collective dynamics that the group has made its specialty over years of musical complicity. The six original compositions on the album, written by Turner, draw their inspiration from the golden age of be-bop while resolutely looking toward the future, touching on the timeless.
