A spiritual journey between Creole blues, jazz and traditional New Orleans folk, The Capitalist Blues is the title of Leyla McCalla’s third album. Inspired by the tense socio-political climate in the United States, it tells of the psychological and emotional effects of life in a capitalist society where money is king and the poorest are left behind. Refusing pessimism and cynicism, and transcending their own melancholy, these songs convey human hope in all its forms, in English as well as in Creole. The Capitalist Blues reveals a more physical side of McCalla’s music, amplified by a voice and melodies that poetically underscore these protest songs.
